Sarah and Jesse

We found some… finally. Since leaving Tasmanian shores in mid March we have been searching the back roads and highways for these special creatures.

Occasionally we’d get so close we could almost smell them. But then we listened to a story about how they slipped through town the week past. Some places had never heard of them before and scoffed at the idea of them. Bicycle adventurers. It took us until reaching Far North Queensland, but we finally found some.

And not just any adventurers either, we found the rarest of the rare. Sarah and Jesse’s story is remarkable. Together they have given away all their worldly possessions except for what is packed on the bikes that they travel on. And that’s not much stuff because they travel light.

At the moment they are doing a recce to plot a course for a very unusual (non) event. Jesse sets out in September each year to travel from some far flung coastline of Australia and races as fast as humanly possible to reach Uluru. If anyone else decides they’d like to follow the route he’s mapped out, they can. If enough ultra-endurance cyclists all decided to start at the same time and with the same route, well, you’d just about call that a race. The Race to the Rock. Sarah likes doing it and keeps winning it. As we heard their stories of grinding days and nights on the saddle, sleep deprivation, unhygienic clothing choices we were in awe. The previous routes have covered some seriously remote and rugged roads. This year the race begins in Port Douglas.
