Wamba Wamba Country

Yarkuwa is a Traditional Owner organisation based in the town of Deniliquin in the Riverina Region of New South Wales. It was formed in 2003 to ensure traditional owner knowledge was preserved in future generations.

We dropped in to find out more about the Wamba Wamba Nation and met Liticia Ross and Tracy Hamilton. They sat down with us for a few minutes to explain a small part of their story. It was fascinating to hear how the large grinding stones that you can see in a part of the video came from outside this area as a traded item. Trade routes with neighbouring tribal groups allowed technology and goods to be exchanged. The raw rock material for these large grinding stones does not occur in the immediate area around here. The mighty waterways of what we now call the Murray River and its tributaries provided for a large population of Wamba Wamba people.
