Maria Island animals

This enchanting national park off the east coast of Tasmania has a history of being an experimental wildlife area with many native and exotic species being introduced to the island over the years. Most recently Tasmanian devils have been released on the island as an insurance population due to their devil facial tumour disease.

The staff on the island strongly encourage visitors to help keep the wildlife wild. The animals are much tamer than usual because they are used to people being around. It is important not to feed the animals as our food can harm them and make them pests around campgrounds. It’s much better to observe the animals doing what they naturally do… and for most of the marsupials on Maria Island that means munching on grass!
