Arthur River to Ulverstone

We’ve been on the road for a month now and this week we reached the north coast of Tasmania. Coming from Arthur River we came past the Woolnorth farming property which is privately owned. It has a wind farm built on the windy parts of it but it is mostly a huge dairy farm.

We really noticed the change in land use from a riding point of view because there were far fewer big march flies and lots more small (really annoying) black flies. They don’t bite but they try to crawl into your nose and eyes. What are they searching for do you think?

The coastline along the north coast is marked by complex geology and beautiful stretches of sandy beaches. Inland there are farms and forests. The main towns are Smithton, Wynyard, Burnie and Ulverstone but lots of people also live in smaller towns and in between on farms. Although the road was busy with trucks and cars after the long weekend we felt safe on the road. On narrower roads and on windy days we take extra precautions to let traffic past safely. Almost everyone has been patient and safe in return.

This week we will head towards Hobart but try to avoid the main highway. If you have suggestions for good routes to take (we don’t mind hills now), let us know!
